John Doolittle, (R-Calif.)

    R...R....R....R....R

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't Doolittle a Republican? How is this "more corruption from the Democrats"? Or maybe you're one of those sarcastic parody sites that pretends to be something it's not? You Pajama-types baffle me sometimes.

I'm sure the media will jump all over democratic corruption, just as soon as they get finished wading through the raw sewage that is the Republican party.

My grievous error. I fixed the post and apologize for the error.

Thanks for being man enough to correct it when you could have just deleted the whole post and none would be the wiser. I have more respect for you already! :>

I really don't think there's a problem with what was going on... if she was really doing the work. It's just like me owning a jewelry store and having my wife collect a pay check from the store.

If she's the one actually involved in the fundraising... it's a legitimate job, and I don't think 15% is all that much either.

I think what I did was the least painful way out.

When you make a mistake admit it and hopefully move on.
...more than $100,000...
It has long been my opinion that the biggest complaint against Republican corruption is from the Democrats because we're such pikers!
Harry Reid pulls a half a million off his shady land deal and all Ms. Doolittle can come up with is a measley hundred thou??

Didn't they try to crucify Ed Meese a while back for a watch or a pair of cufflinks? Republicans always make Dems look bad by being such small time grifters! Even that guy Jefferson took a hundred thou for a day's work. Took John's missus four years to skim that much!

Professional Fundraisers typically get 20 or 25% as a few (I've seen as high as 40%). And if you think spouses taking a fundraising few for their services is a bootable offense, I would guess a third of congress would be on the street - and who knows how many state legislators nationwide.

Seriously, it was a very classy way to handle it, and that's not an easy thing for me to say to a Republican.

Democrat Doolittle has worst t worry about, ..i.e. both the Abromoff and Duke Cunningham.
Doolittle nearly lost his recent election due to the Abramoff scandal, which has drained $100,000 from his campaign coffers to pay lawyers to fight off federal prosecutors.
Abramoff use to hire his wife:
The case against Doolittle -- which involves more than just his closeness to Abramoff, but also a key figure in the Duke Cunningham bribery scandal -- has been outlined in a number of news stories, and you can see it laid out in all its glory and knotty specifics in Democracy 21's ethics complaint and our reference section. But it's fairly easy to summarize.

Doolittle's wife was on Abramoff's payroll on and off for approximately two years, and the payments suspiciously align with actions Doolittle took on behalf of Abramoff's clients. On top of that, Abramoff, his associates and clients were very generous to Doolittle, contributing $140,000 to his various committees dating back to 1999. Doolittle himself saw a cut of that, thanks to the fact that for a number of years he's paid his wife a 15% sliver of contributions to his campaign.

In return, Doolittle went to bat for Abramoff clients. He delivered $400,000 in federal funds to the Northern Mariana Islands, for example, the Abramoff client known mostly for its garment sweatshops; Abramoff referred to him as a "hero" for the islands. And he wrote letters to help out Abramoff's tribal clients. In 2002, he wrote a letter that sought to prevent a Louisiana tribe from building a casino, an action which he explained as consistent with his anti-gambling position. And in 2003, he wrote letters seeking to help Indian casinos open up; he explained there that he was "just trying to ensure a fair process" for the tribe. The list goes on.

TPMuckraker has been all over him:
Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) is one of four congressmen whom the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal have both named as being investigated for their ties to Jack Abramoff.

Doolittle has seats on two powerful committees for granting favors: the Committee on House Administration as well as the Appropriations Committee. He also holds the sixth highest ranking elected position in the House Leadership, the Secretary of the House Republican Conference.

Doolittle, a Mormon and "ardent opponent of casino gambling," was "particularly close to Abramoff," according to former Abramoff associates. Doolittle himself has admitted this.

Ah, OK--cool. Thanks for the honest admission and change in post. I feel like these days it's less about Democrat Vs. Republican and more us regular folks Vs. politicians. I'm an indy because I can't stand either party. To me, saying "bipartisan" is just another way of saying "pro-big-government."

At least something good came out of this.
