Say Anything: McCain to ‘Suspend’ Campaign to focus on economy

• HG · 1 year ago
A stunt?
Pretty lame assessment. Why would McCain give Obama the airwaves (McCain pulled his commercials) and go silent until the needed legislation is passed?

Sounds more like he is keeping his campaign promise...
Country First.

Don't expect liberals to see anything more than a stunt. Principle isn't exactly their forte.

Yes, country first:
Of all Senators, John McCain has been the most absent. There have been 643 votes taken in the current Senate session: McCain has missed 412 of them.

McCain has not voted in the Senate since April 8th. Since March, he has missed 109 of the last 110 votes.

He missed votes on the GI Bill, energy policy, and in 2007 he missed "all 15 critical environmental votes in the Senate" -- giving him a 2007 rating of 0% from the League of Conservation Voters.
Welcome back, John.

McCain found out he is 8 points behind and wants Obama to stop campaigning. Smart.

One of McCain's campaign people was on Fox this morning and asked about the new poll numbers and he literally said "we have got to move away from the economic situation and talk about issues McCain wants to talk about", and Meagan Kelly laughed and said she wasn't sure the American people want to move the conversation from the economy right now.

McCain is in trouble. Make no mistake about it. This is a stunt.
"all 15 critical environmental votes in the Senate"
That's what happens when your campaigning, hence the suspension.

Compare your claims to Barack's voting record.

Doesn't McCain know that there are no time outs in the Oval Office?

Doesn't McCain know he'll be called upon to walk AND chew gum at the same time?

If McCain can't multi-task he should stop hiding behind Palin's skirts and admit it.

You sorry saps, you're just pissed Obama couldn't lead on this or any other issue save kindergarten sex ed and infanticide.
• goon · 1 year ago
NOBAMA want to stay on the campaign where he is much better than actually doing his senate job. 100+ present votes is pretty weak in my opinion.
• Carrick · 1 year ago
I happen to think it's lame as hell.
Seems like a stunt.
Really? Harry Reid's stunt? He was practically begging McCain to return to Washington to give them some guidance?
"We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do."
-Harry Reid 9/23/08

The only stunt around here happened to the intellectual growth of the Left! Heh.
• Proof · 1 year ago
Oh, and Dingy Harry has since flip flopped on this position. Nothing to see here! Move along!
• Hannitized · 1 year ago
The intent could be to show Americans that McCain is willing to "work in a bi-partisan effort" to resolve the crisis that he denied was a crisis only a few days ago.

HG, you know that kindergarten sex ed class was to help children recognize pedophiles, right?

(This was one of the worst McCain smears of the election. Even my mother-in-law, a die-hard southern republican, admitted that it was in poor taste.)

I hope the debates still happen on Friday, as I think a lot of people would be reassured by some open discussion of our economy and the route the nation will be taking. Also, when the presidential candidates are talking face-to-face, the level of discourse will be raised.
HG, you know that kindergarten sex ed class was to help children recognize pedophiles, right?
That's the spin Obama tried to put on it after he was called on it. The reality was a little different.

Nice try. But it's untrue. The language is clear.

A summary of what you've linked to makes me wonder if we are seeing the same thing.

a.) Parents can keep their children out of those classes.
b.) These classes will emphasize abstinence.
c.) This information will be based on fact.

And I'll copy and paste their first two priorities for the curriculum information described in c.):

9 (1) Factual information presented in course
10 material and instruction shall be medically accurate and
11 objective.
12 (2) All (1) course material and instruction shall
13 be age and developmentally appropriate.

Age appropriateness seems pretty important to them as it is listed directly after "this course shall not be based on someone's random opinion."

(8)-(11) Also deal with unwanted sexual activity, unwanted sexual harassment, and the illegality of that behavior with minors.

dakota,

You missed the first paragraph?
(a) No pupil shall be required to take or participate in
9 any class or course in comprehensive sex education if the
10 pupil's his parent or guardian submits written objection
11 thereto, and refusal to take or participate in such course or
12 program shall not be reason for suspension or expulsion of
13 such pupil. Each class or course in comprehensive sex
14 education offered in any of grades K 6 through 12 shall
15 include instruction on the prevention of sexually transmitted
16 infections, including the prevention, transmission and spread
17 of HIV AIDS. Nothing in this Section prohibits instruction in
18 sanitation, hygiene or traditional courses in biology.
19 (b) All public elementary, junior high, and senior high
20 school classes that teach sex education and discuss sexual
21 activity or behavior intercourse shall emphasize that
22 abstinence is an effective method of preventing unintended is
23 the expected norm in that abstinence from sexual intercourse
24 is the only protection that is 100% effective against
25 unwanted teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases,
26 and HIV acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) when
27 transmitted sexually.
28 (c) In this subsection (c):
29 "Factual information" includes without limitation
30 medical, psychiatric, psychological, empirical, and
31 statistical statements.
The language about abstinence is being amended in the legislation, not strengthened, and clearly the emphasis of the legislation is avoiding std's. This is to be taught starting in kindergarten.
• dakotaninoregon · 1 year ago
Sections a and b are about parent's rights to not have their children taught these lessons and that abstinence will be emphasized. Section a includes a brief description of the classes in general, which are then elaborated on in section c. Or, at least, that's how it appeared to me.

I do agree that abstinence started out being promoted in much stronger language and was then scaled back.

p.s. I'm pretty new to this blogging. How do you do your pretty block quotes? Also, I would have liked to copy and paste with the underlining and crossing out as in the bill, but it wasn't happening.

Dakota,

This is the point of contention and the thrust of the legislation.

So, the nation is going broke, banks are failing, jobs are disappearing, and if you ask the media, all the presidential campaigns are worried about is who's to blame.
What has McCain contributed to the bailout package? Most people don't know. But, I do know that he thinks Barack Obama deserves some of the blame for not acting earlier, and for refusing to reschedule the presidential debate to work on a solution for the economic crisis (as, apparently, does FOX News). And Obama? Well, no matter what he plans to do about the economy, at least we know he and the rest of the Democrats think the Republicans are at fault. Democrats are blaming Nancy Pelosi; Bill Clinton is blaming Democrats--but who is finding a solution?
Sure, there's been news coverage of what is happening as the government scrambles to find a solution--what legislation has been proposed, and how it will help. But, for the most part, that kind of writing has been short, sparse and unclear. As the government has scrambled to find a solution, the media has scrambled to find a scapegoat. I Googled the campaigns and their positions on the bailout. The first search result? "Campaigns assign bailout blame." Most of the stories that followed made a similar point.
Maybe it's like a University of Virginia business professor I spoke to said--the problem is that so many people don't understand the financial problem, or the implications of the bailout.
All people know is that the economy stinks, and maybe for the campaigns, and the media, it's easier to find someone to blame than to explain the intricacies of a solution.
I guess that makes sense, but if you ask me it's a cop-out. It doesn't really matter how we got IN to this mess--it's too late to do anything about it now. What matters is who can get us OUT. And the only way we're going to learn that is if the media starts focusing on what the candidates are doing to help the failing economy, instead of just on who they're blaming for the problem.

And round and round you go.

Government creates the problem, government offers solution, government creates the problem, government offers solution.

Cheerleaders for government then ask for "help".

Round and round...
